The Festival of Lights Opens Nov. 13, and Its Color-Coded Calendar Doubles as a James Island Traffic Forecast

November 5, 2026

Which nights will Riverland Drive be busiest between now and New Year's Eve? Charleston County Parks has already answered that, night by night, on the ticket calendar for the 37th Holiday Festival of Lights. The festival opens tomorrow, Friday, Nov. 13, and runs nightly from 5:30 to 10 p.m. through Dec. 31 at James Island County Park.

Each night carries a color based on expected attendance. Green means lighter traffic and crowds, yellow means moderate, and red means heavy. The county uses the colors to set prices and spread out the lines. Anyone who drives Folly Road, Camp Road or Riverland Drive after dark can also read them as a forecast. Read that way, the calendar shows a season in two halves. Through mid-December the island gets mostly quiet weeknights. After Dec. 15 there isn't one green night left.

Five Weeks of Mostly Green, Then None

The color sets the price. A standard vehicle carrying up to 15 people pays $15 online or $25 at the gate on a green night, $25 or $35 on a yellow night, and $30 or $45 on a red night. Here is how the 2026 calendar lays out.

Week Green Yellow Red
Opening, Nov. 13–15 Fri. 13, Sat. 14, Sun. 15
Nov. 16–22 Mon. 16 through Fri. 20, Sun. 22 Sat. 21
Nov. 23–29 Mon. 23, Tue. 24, Wed. 25, Sun. 29 Thanksgiving Thu. 26, Sat. 28 Fri. 27
Nov. 30–Dec. 6 Mon. Nov. 30 through Fri. Dec. 4 Sat. 5, Sun. 6
Dec. 7–13 Mon. 7 through Thu. 10 Fri. 11, Sun. 13 Sat. 12
Dec. 14–20 Mon. 14, Tue. 15 Wed. 16, Thu. 17 Fri. 18, Sat. 19, Sun. 20
Dec. 21–27 Christmas Eve Thu. 24, Christmas Fri. 25, Sun. 27 Mon. 21, Tue. 22, Wed. 23, Sat. 26
Dec. 28–31 Mon. 28 through New Year's Eve Thu. 31

The whole opening weekend is green. The county rates Friday through Sunday among its lighter nights, so a $15 advance ticket covers opening night.

Saturdays are where the color changes first. Nov. 21, Nov. 28 and Dec. 5 are yellow, and Dec. 12 turns red. Most Sundays stay a step lower than the Saturday before. Nov. 22 and Nov. 29 are green, and Dec. 13 is yellow the night after a red Saturday.

Then there's the break. Tuesday, Dec. 15 is the last green night of the season. From Dec. 16 on, every night is yellow or red, including the Monday through Wednesday before Christmas. Christmas Day itself is only yellow. The Saturday after it, Dec. 26, goes back to red.

For island households, that sets the planning window. Any trip through the gate at the lowest price, and any errand on Riverland Drive on the lightest-traffic nights, has to fit between now and Dec. 15. The county's own advice runs the same way. It recommends buying ahead and choosing a green or yellow night.

Dec. 12 Stacks Up More Than the Lights

Saturday, Dec. 12 is the one red night outside Black Friday and the week before Christmas. Other things are scheduled on James Island and Folly Beach that day too.

  • Mingle with Kringle: Santa makes a daytime appearance at James Island County Park on Saturdays, Dec. 5 and Dec. 12.
  • Folly Beach Christmas Parade: It steps off at noon on Center Street, and Santa visits Folly River Park afterward.
  • The festival itself: The gates open at 5:30 p.m. on a night rated for heavy traffic and large crowds.

So Folly Road carries parade traffic toward the beach at midday and festival traffic toward Riverland Drive by evening. Earlier in the month the calendar is lighter. On Friday, Dec. 4, a green night, the Town of James Island holds its Town Market at Town Hall from 6 to 9 p.m., with vendors, food trucks, music and family activities.

The county has also set aside time for families who want Santa without the evening lines. People with disabilities and their families can schedule private inclusive visits with Santa on Sunday, Dec. 6 and Sunday, Dec. 13. Santa is at the festival every night from opening night through Dec. 23. Booking is on the county's Visit With Santa page.

Which Roads Feed the Gate

Charleston County Parks sends festival traffic off Folly Road onto George L. Griffith Boulevard or Grimball Road and then to Riverland Drive. Larger vehicles go a different way, Folly Road to Camp Road to Riverland Drive, to avoid low branches and tight turns. Before leaving home, check the night's color against those routes. On red nights the Griffith and Grimball cut-throughs carry the extra cars.

Camp Road looks different this season. The compact roundabout at Fort Johnson Road and Camp Road opened to vehicles on Aug. 10, and Charleston County's notice sent pedestrians to a Seaside Lane detour while sidewalk work continued. The county's September update said the roundabout, drainage and utility relocations were complete and signs were going up. A second project farther along Fort Johnson Road, a new signal at Secessionville Road, had signal installation scheduled to begin in October. The county expects work on both intersections to continue through June 2027.

Walking or biking in isn't an option on festival nights. The county doesn't admit pedestrians or bicycles during regular festival hours. The one exception is the registered two-mile Fun Run and Walk, held before opening on Wednesday, Nov. 11 and tonight, Thursday, Nov. 12. It costs $38 per standard vehicle of up to 15 people. Gates close to traffic at 6:30 p.m., and the county asks participants to arrive by 6 p.m.

The Stops Along the Same Routes

Inside the park, the festival has the Festival Express train, the 50-ton sand sculpture, the old-fashioned carousel, the climbing wall, marshmallow roasting, holiday shops, and snacks like pretzels and kettle corn, all spread along a three-mile drive past more than 750 light displays. Outside the gate, the roads that lead there have picked up some new names.

On Folly Road, Three Monkeys Ice Cream Parlour held its grand opening on Aug. 1 at 915 Folly Road, Unit P, serving ice cream and coffee, Count on 2 reported. It sits right on the main road toward the Griffith and Grimball turnoffs.

On Harbor View Road, Gustard's Custard opened at 101 Harbor View Road on Oct. 21, according to Holy City Sinner's 2026 openings list. Farther along the same road, The Harlow at 1015 Harbor View Road has served burgers and oysters since November 2023.

The Harlow's owners, Josh and Katie Drewry, are behind Char House Social, a Texas-style steakhouse at 1234 Camp Road, on the large-vehicle route to the park. The Post and Courier reported that the concept pairs char-grilled cuts with a whiskey and bourbon bar, a permanent stage for live music, and an outdoor area called The Yard at Char House for guests waiting on a table, with no reservations but call-ahead tables for large parties. "Our heart is with James Island," Katie Drewry, who grew up on the island, told the paper. The restaurant's Instagram account is @charhousesocial.

A Few Ways to Pay Less

Green-night pricing isn't the only discount. Gold Pass members get one free admission per annual membership period for a standard vehicle of one to 15 people. They show the pass at the gate and don't need a ticket in advance, but they should allow three to four days for the festival pass to show up after buying or renewing. Gift passes cost $25 each for one to nine, with lower prices at higher quantities, and are ordered through the Customer Relations office at 843-795-4386.

Advance tickets are good only for the booked date between 5:30 and 10 p.m., and the county doesn't refund them. Pick the night before you buy. Larger vehicles pay a flat rate, $50 for 16 to 30 people on green nights and $75 on yellow or red nights. The season ends with a New Year's Eve fireworks display on Dec. 31.

The festival is a big part of what makes a James Island address feel like home in December.
