August on Folly is the shoulder. The July 4 fireworks are packed away, the Mermaids & Mateys costumes are still in a bin somewhere, and the Christmas Parade is a rumor. For the people who live here, that quiet is the point. It is the month you get your booth back at Chico Feo, the month the pier stops feeling like a photo op, and the month you finally try the place everyone has been talking about.
This year, the place everyone has been talking about is new. And it is sitting on the most photographed piece of lumber on the island.
The Pier Just Got A New Anchor
The biggest change to Folly's food scene this summer did not happen on Center Street. It happened one block east, at 101 E. Arctic Avenue, out over the sand. Koko's on the Pier Tiki Kitchen & Bar announced its arrival on July 31, 2026, pitching itself as the meeting point of Folly's laid-back island vibes and the bright tropical flavors of Polynesia. The house has been calling it "Follynesian," which will either grow on you or it will not.
What matters for residents is what the space is now, not what it used to be. Koko's sits right over the sand, serving coastal bites and tiki drinks with live music, salty breezes, and sunset views. That is a different animal from the fried-basket pier concessions the island has cycled through over the years. It is also open late for Folly standards, with a kitchen menu that leans into crab dip, wonton nachos, and shrimp on cool slaw rather than the usual burger-and-fries pier shorthand.
If you have been avoiding the pier since spring because you assumed it was tourists all the way down, August is the month to test that theory again. The crowds thin after the first week, and the walk from Center Street to the pier stairs is short enough that it fits a weeknight.

- Lost Dog Cafe — Breakfast and brunch through mid-afternoon. In August this is where you go before the beach, not after.
- Rita's Seaside Grille — 2 Center Street. Big patio, TVs, easy call for a group when nobody wants to decide.
- The Washout — 41 Center Street. Casual American with a bar that runs later than most.
- Taco Boy — Charleston's taqueria-and-cantina format on the beach end. Drag Bingo is on the calendar for January 9, 2026, if you want to plan ahead, but the weekly tequila-flight nights are the summer draw.
- Planet Follywood — 32A Center Street. Dive-bar energy, nightly specials, and the wing-taco-ribs rotation that has been running for years.
- Locklear's on Little Oak — Italian, small room, outdoor seating. Fills up quietly.
- Folly Beach Crab Shack — 26 Center Street. Southern Living had it on a Top 10 Seafood list, and the sleeves-up steampot format has not changed.
- Roasted at Tides — The Tides Folly Beach coffee shop opens daily from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., serving Starbucks coffee, espresso, and grab-and-go items along with beach gear if you forgot something. In August the 6 a.m. hour matters. You want to be off the sand by 10.
None of these are new. That is the point. In a month with one big opening, the rest of the strip settles into what it does well, and residents can finally get a table without a wait.
The August Calendar Residents Actually Use
Folly's headline festivals cluster in fall and winter. Most of the island's annual events take place between early fall and early spring, which is why August feels different from July. The dates worth putting on the fridge this month are smaller and mostly free.
August 26, National Dog Day. The island encourages residents to celebrate National Dog Day on August 26 with their four-legged friends at dog-friendly establishments on the island. Folly's leash rules on the beach loosen off-season, so this is a good day to test which of the Center Street patios will actually let your dog under the table. Most will.
August 31, SC Palmetto Day. August 31 is the day the visitor's office flags for Palmetto State facts and small celebrations around town. It is not a parade day. It is a "get a drink somewhere with a palmetto on the sign" day.
If you want a bigger swing, the Charleston chapter of the Surfrider Foundation is still running its Hold On To Your Butt cigarette-disposal campaign in partnership with the city, and August is a legitimate month to give an hour to a beach sweep. What Comes After Labor Day
The reason August feels quiet is that September and October land hard.
Mermaids & Mateys returns to Folly Beach on October 3, 2026, with the full costume-and-crew treatment on Center Street. The City of Folly Beach Christmas Parade lines up along Center Street on December 12, 2026, and the New Year's Eve Fireworks Show follows on Wednesday, December 31. The Sea & Sand Festival, the island's longest-running festival at 35 years, returns Saturday, February 20, 2027 with a weekend of family events. If you host visitors on any of those weekends, August is when you tell them to book flights, because rentals inside the city limits start moving in September.
Two things worth flagging for the fall calendar. Koko's will be running its first full event season, which means the pier is likely to become a fixed point on the festival maps for the first time in a while. And the visitor's calendar already shows a Koko's-hosted date on July 17, 2026 at the 101 E. Arctic address, so expect the venue to keep adding programming through the fall rather than easing into it.

For residents, the story of August 2026 is not the food scene expanding. It is the geography of the food scene shifting.
